Increase of the 'Taxe Foncière' on French property

If you own property in France, you are undoubtedly familiar with the Taxe Foncière. This annual tax is levied on both developed and undeveloped properties.

You receive the assessment every year around the beginning of September, either by post or through your online account on impots.gouv.fr. If you pay via the online platform, you have until 20 October 2024 to complete the payment. For other payment methods, an earlier deadline of 15 October 2024 applies. If you miss the payment deadline, you risk incurring a fine.

Sharp increase in 2024

Notably, this year, the tax has risen by at least 3.9% compared to last year. Since the tax is set regionally, increases can vary significantly depending on the area. In cities like Nice, Saint-Étienne, and Annecy, rates have jumped by 19%, 15%, and 14%, respectively.

Causes

This increase is due to several factors:

Indexing to inflation

The tax is partly calculated based on the cadastral value of the property, which is adjusted annually in line with inflation.

Local rate determination

Local authorities set the tax rate themselves. However, they are increasingly facing higher costs and a reduction in subsidies from the French government. In order to balance their budgets, municipalities are often forced to raise the Taxe Foncière rate.
